Microsoft regularly releases free downloads to fix
security problems with Windows, Internet Explorer and other
Microsoft software such as Office. If you are a PC user you
can visit
http://update.microsoft.com/
for these updates.
2. Install A Firewall
A good firewall such as
ZoneAlarm will prevent
programs from accessing the Internet without your
permission, and block access to your PC from intruders.
Later versions of Microsoft Windows (XP service pack 2 and
Vista) have firewalls built in. Make sure these
firewalls are running.
3. Check For Viruses
Malicious virus code can infect your PC's system files and
damage your important data. Invest in a well known and
widely used anti-virus program from companies like
Symantec (Norton) or
McAfee. Avoid using
free anti-virus programs because not only may they be
viruses themselves in disguise, they may not have the proper
updates to keep your computer safe. As a rule of thumb
"Free" is not the route to take when it comes to anti-virus.
4. Remove Spyware and Malware (Malicious Software)
Spyware is malicious code that tracks your movements on the
Internet and can even affect your PC's performance. Many
anti-virus programs like those mentioned above also search
for Spyware and Malware. You may also find several
reputable Spyware and Malware removal programs on
www.Download.com by
searching for those terms.
5. Browse More Safely
The latest web browsers such as Internet Explorer 8 and
Firefox 2 offer security features like pop-up blockers and
phishing filters to keep you safe when visiting web sites.
